Digital plans to offer Mosaic on all of its computer systems, including its Alpha AXP and Intel personal systems, and others running the DEC OSF/1, OpenVMS, Windows and Windows NT operating systems and the PATHWORKS network operating system.
``Mosaic availability on all of our systems underscores Digital's belief that information access is a competitive advantage for our customers and that we are committed to providing commercailly supported Internet-ready systems today,'' said William D. Strecker, vice president of Engineering.
Mosaic is a global ``browser'' that allows users to search for and retrieve, display, store and forward documents and data from anywhere in the world via the Internet. With simple, point-and-click features, Mosaic provides unlimited access to the almost infinite variety of information and subject matter found on the Interent.
Mosaic works in conjunction with the Internet's World Wide Web, a diverse collection of information servers. Individuals using the Mosaic tool on the World Wide Web need little, if any, training to access text, images, video and audio. The World Wide Web is a ``hypermedia'' information environment, meaning that by simply highlighting a subject, information linked to that subject can be accessed quickly from whereever it may reside in the world. The World Wide Web is the fastest growing Internet information service, and easily sorts out the mountains of information residing on the Internet.
``Because of the company's many years of networking experience, Digital clearly recognizes that the combination of the World Wide Web and Spyglass' commercially enhanced and supported version of Mosaic will furnish the keys to communication and commerce on the Internet,'' said Timothy Krauskopf, Spyglass's co-founder and director of Development. ``Our agreement with Digital is an example of how Spyglass will, in effect, be creating a `wholesale' distribution channel for Mosaic, which will expedite its delivery to millions of users.''
Digital also announced that it is providing Alpha/AXP servers to the NCSA for the operation of its World Wide Web environment. Joseph Hardin, Associate Director of the Software Development Group at NCSA said, ``We look forward to continuing our relationship with Digital on World Wide Web research.''
Sam Fuller, Vice President of Corporate Research at Digital said ``Digital is committed to an aggressive and ongoing research campaign on Internet-related technologies, ranging from our successful efforts in establishing a presence on the Internet for the City of Palo Alto to our base networking technologies, such as ATM, security, and high performance TCP/IP.''
