For archival purposes, I file everything by the year it had its world premiere. Many of these films will have been commercially released in the U.S. a year or two later, so my lists won’t always match up with other folks’ lists.
Films I haven’t yet rated on that scale are
marked with if I
currently think they belong in my top ten. These films are subject to
being shifted around or yanked altogether at any moment, after I revisit
them and they get a numeral. (Lists from prior to about 1988 are
especially suspect, as I compiled them long ago from memories that were
in many cases already pretty dusty.)
Seen but currently unrated (and not presumptively
among my top 10):After the Rehearsal (Bergman); Against
All Odds (Hackford); All of Me (Reiner); Best Defense
(Huyck); Body Double (De Palma); The Brother from
AnotherPlanet (Sayles); Cal (O'Connor); City of Pirates
(Ruiz); Cloak & Dagger (Franklin); The Company of Wolves
(Jordan); Crackers (Malle); Crimes of Passion (Russell);
Dreamscape (Ruben); Fleeing From Evil to God (Makhmalbaf);
<Full Moon in Paris (Rohmer); The Funeral (Itami);
Irreconcilable Differences (Shyer); Johnny Dangerously
(Heckerling); The Karate Kid (Avildsen); The Killing Fields
(Joffé); The Last Starfighter (Castle); Lensman
(Kawajiri & Hirokawa); The Lonely Guy (Hiller); Meantime
(Leigh); Mrs. Soffel (Armstrong); The Muppets Take
Manhattan (Oz); The Natural (Levinson); Next of Kin
(Egoyan); Nineteen Eighty-Four (Radford); Nothing Left to Do
but Cry (Troisi & Benigni); Oh, God! You Devil (Bogart);
A Passage to India (Lean); Places in the Heart (Benton);
Purple Rain (Magnoli); Revenge of the Nerds (Kanew);
Romancing the Stone (Zemeckis); A Soldier's Story
(Jewison); Splash (Howard); Starman (Carpenter); Streets
of Fire (Hill); A Sunday in the Country (Tavernier);
Supergirl (Szwarc); Teachers (Hiller); 2010 (Hyams);
The Wannsee Conference (Schirk); What Have I Done to Deserve
This? (Almodóvar)

Boy Meets Girl (Carax); Comfort and Joy (Forsyth); Fear
City (Ferrara); Kaos (Taviani Bros.); Shanghai Blues
(Tsui); Special Effects (Cohen)
I occasionally write reviews
of older movies, but it happens too infrequently to file them by
year.
