It took a little while, but Tony at Lab-Link made a five-minute test of the section of reel two that has been prone to sound problems. The test came out completely clean. To me, this suggests that the lab has been having random problems; to Tony, this seems to mean that all theories have been debunked and that mystery reigns. He wants to send the test to Benjamin at Magno for more consultation. I don't know what good that will do, but I agreed. Tony says that the negative may start to show damage if we keep making prints, which is definitely something to worry about. But I'm sufficiently irritated by the last print's defects that I'd be willing to chance it.
