Boy, did I make a mistake in not getting a quote in writing from DG Systems.
When I went to pick up the duplicated D2 tape yesterday, I was told that
the price was $242 instead of the $98 I had been quoted. I assumed
that the accounting department had made a mistake, but when I called back
today and spoke to the sales rep who gave me the low price, he'd forgotten
he'd ever talked to me and confirmed the $242 price. Upset, I called
around a bit, got a $175 quote, and decided to try to get my work back
from DG, which I suppose would have involved their erasing the copy they'd
made. But I never got that far, as the sales rep didn't return my
multiple calls, and everyone else I spoke to was less than sympathetic.
As night fell on the prospect of a weekend of inactivity, more unpleasantness
on Monday, and a hostile company holding my $2000 master tape hostage,
I decided to give up on making DG pay for their sins, and went to their
office and gave the production department the $242 for the original and
its clone. Giving in didn't feel very good, but neither did standing
on principle, and this way I can send a D2 off tomorrow to Vaughn Duplicating
in Minneapolis, and have 100 VHS copies by sometime next week. I'll
assuage my pride by writing a nasty letter to the VP of sales....
