Their honeymoon almost over, and their relationship somewhat improved after Mimi's effort to suppress her negative reactions, the couple visits one of Michael's childhood haunts.
50 EXT. SCENIC VIEW - DAY 50 From the top of a small mountain, we can see an entire Pennsylvania river valley, filled with little towns and bordered by tree-covered mountains. Michael and Mimi stand at the scenic view, holding hands, looking out at the valley. MIMI I'm so sorry we didn't get to look around more. It's such a beautiful place. MICHAEL The countryside is beautiful. The cities have some nice old areas, but mostly they're a little run down. They look nicer from a distance. MIMI I'll miss it. I wish we could stay longer. There is a pause. Mimi looks at Michael. MIMI (cont.) I know. You're glad it's over. MICHAEL (laughing) A little bit. I'm sorry. Mimi tries to take Michael's comment in stride, but her mood darkens a little. MIMI Don't be sorry. (pause) I'll miss it, though. I had a good time. They stand in silence for a moment. MICHAEL We used to come up here at night when I was in high school, and drink beer, and smoke pot. Play the guitar. The rocks would stay warm at night from the sun hitting them all day. MIMI That sounds nice. I wish I were there. MICHAEL I wish you were too. MIMI Except that you never would have gotten close enough to talk to me. I was just a fright in high school. MICHAEL I'm sure you looked nice. MIMI No. You never would have looked twice at me. (pause) I still don't understand why you look twice at me now. MICHAEL Oh, Mimi. What a thing to say. MIMI I don't. MICHAEL (putting his arm around Mimi) You're the most exciting person I've ever met. No one else comes close. Mimi shakes her head. She's not convinced.
