I spoke to Fran and Walter at Zounds today. Their opinion is that some of the problems that I heard when listening to the DAT with headphones would also show up on the optical track. It sounds like a borderline sort of thing, but I booked some time in the mix room this Thursday to attack the worst of the defects. I'm dying to move forward to the next print, but as long as I've come this far I might as well pour one or two hundred more dollars down the drain. On the bright side, the Zounds people said that the DAT's frequency range was comfortably within the range of the optical track, so I don't have to work over the entire mix, as I had feared I would.
