90mm, f/5.6, 1/500s, ISO 200
(Nikon D40 w/ Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens)

I’ve discovered how my Nikon can fail me. Normally, it produces slightly saturated, but otherwise accurate colors. Reds are more saturated than other colors, but only in a nice, photogenic way. It makes sunsets particularly spectacular. However, when the red is strong enough, it completely washes out the image. I discovered this today. In googling to try to find a solution, the consensus seems to be they do that.

Hopefully, workarounds such as shooting in RAW mode or deliberately under-exposing the image and correcting later will allow me to get a good picture. I’ll find out on the next sunny day I get back to this patch.

90mm, f/7.1, 1/800s, ISO 200, Exposure Bias -1, Shot as RAW
(Nikon D40 w/ Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro lens)

Update: I went back the very next day and experimented. Here is another try. I also tried with the same exposure compensations as a FINE JPEG, in all cases, the JPEG was significantly worse than the RAW version.

90mm, f/7.1, 1/1600s, ISO 200, Exposure Bias -2, Shot as RAW

And a third.
