For years I saw this monument in the distance, as I walked around Brooklyn. I never knew what it was; just a monumnent in Fort Greene Park. I stumbled upon the desciption of the monument in the WPA Guide to New York City about four years ago. It is important me because it is one of the few monuments standing that many of families living in Brookyn from 1800's would have seen it is a connection to them. My great grandmother, who died when I was 17 years old, would have seen it when as a child she walked to church. The WPA Guide to New York City:
