Weekly Report

of the

Health Department
of the City of Brooklyn, N.Y.

 

During the week ended at noon Saturday, January 19, 1895, there were reported to this Department 184 marriages, 344 births, 36 still-births, 508 deaths, and 174 cases of contagious disease. The estimated population of the city being 1,080,000, the deaths reported represented an annual rate of 24.5 per thousand as against a rate of 24.3 for the proceeding week and an average and an average rate of 25.6 for the corresponding weeks of the previous five years. During the week 16 free vaccinations were preformed, bacteriological examinations were made in 100 cases of suspected diphtheria, and in 2 suspected tuberculosis, 6 horses were inspected for glanders and no cattle for tuberculosis. At Kingston Avenue Hospital, 5 patients were admitted, 2 were discharged and 2 died. Citizens' complaints to the number of 76 were investigated, 129 orders for work to done were issued and 51 cases were referred to the Counsel for prosecution on account of non complaince with orders. Conviction was obtiained in no cases of violation of sanitary ordinances, and fines aggregating $0 were imposed. The details of the work of the Department will be found in the subjoined tables.
