Prior to 1945, Indonesia was under colonial rule by the Dutch. For earlier issues refer to Netherlands Indies.
Republik Indonesia (Republic of Indonesia)
The fortunes of war change and eventually the Japanese inflicted their most brutal methods of control on the people of Indonesia as they had in other countries that they had conquered. In 1945 the Allied forces — with the help of the Atomic Bomb — forced the Japanese into a position where they had no option than to surrender. On 15 August 1945, the Japanese forces surrendered, and, on 17 August 1945, the Republic of Indonesia was proclaimed, mainly as a result of the Japanese conquest that drove out the Dutch colonial government and ignited the fires of self-determination. The Dutch tried to regain control over the Indonesian nationalists from 1946 until 28 December 1949 and the monetary chaos went to ironic extremes. In various areas, held by each of the warring factions, Japanese occupation currency was still treated as valid and was given an exchange rate in Gulden and Rupiahs until such time that the Dutch relinquished control and withdrew from Indonesia.

The 1945 Constitution stipulated the foundation for the economic development, among others by focusing on the existence of the Central Bank. Through the nationalization of De Javasche Bank (DJB) at the end of 1951, the attempts to set up a Circulation Bank and Central Bank for the Republic of Indonesia began. On 10 April 1953, the parliament endorsed Draft Principal Act on the Central Bank which had previously been presented by the Nationalization Committee in September 1952. The draft was enacted as Act No. 11 of 1953 regarding the Principal Act of the Central Bank that was effective from 1 July 1953. 1968 Issue - Soedirman Series
By 1968 the Suharto New Order had been established, and Bank Indonesia, as of 1968 was given sole right to issue banknotes (including notes below 5 rupiah) as well as coins (which had previously been the issue of the central government).
Hence, the new issue of banknotes 1 to 1,000 Rupiah, dated 1968, were all eminating from Bank Indonesia. The notes featured the revolutionary hero General Soedirman, backed by various scenes of industry. The notes were issued in 1968 and 1969. In 1970, notes of the same theme (but a different watermark) were added in 5,000 and 10,000 rupiah denominations, thus restoring notes to the same denominations that had been circulating prior the 1965 devaluation.
