Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal Notes

List in Signature Order

Kingdom of Nepal

By the early 12th century, leaders in the area now known as Nepal emerged. Initially their reign was marked by upheaval, but the kings consolidated their power and ruled over the next 200 years — by the late 14th century, much of the country began to come under a unified rule. This unity was short-lived — in 1482 the region was carved into three kingdoms: Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.

After centuries of petty rivalry between the three kingdoms, in the mid-18th century, Prithvi Narayan Shah, a Gorkha King set out to unify the kingdoms. Seeking arms and aid from India, and buying the neutrality of bordering Indian kingdoms, he embarked on his mission in 1765. After several bloody battles and sieges, he managed to unify the Kathmandu Valley three years later in 1768. However, an actual battle never took place to conquer the Kathmandu valley — it was taken over by Prithvi Narayan and his troops without any effort, during Indra Jatra, a festival of Newars, when all the valley's citizens were celebrating the festival. This event marked the birth of the modern nation of Nepal.

The early banknotes which were issued between 1945 and 1955 during the rule of King Tribhuvan were not put into circulation by a Central Bank which did not exist in Nepal at that time. The issuing authority was the treasury which had the name Sadar Muluki Khana. Therefore the notes of king Tribhuvan were not signed by a bank governor, but by a Kajanchi (head of the treasury) who was a high Hindu priest in the same time. Nepal’s early paper currency probably includes the only notes of the world which were signed by a high priest. These early notes were printed by the Indian Security Press in Nashik and do not have any security features, except for the water marks and the special paper on which they are printed.

In 1951, the government introduced notes for 1, 5, 10 and 100 rupees, with the name mohru (originally a silver coin which weighed about 5.4 grams) used in Nepalese. The State Bank took over note issuance in 1956 and, in its second issue, began using the name rupee in the Nepalese texts. In 1972, 500 and 1000 rupees notes were added, followed by 50 rupees in 1974 and 2 rupees in 1981, after the discontinuation of production of 1 rupee notes (some are still in circulation). 20 rupees notes were introduced in 1982. 1 and 2 rupees notes are no longer produced, although previously issued ones are still in circulation.

Government of Nepal

1951 ND Second Issue

King Tribhuhvan Bir Bikram Shah (30 June 1906 - 13 March 1955) was King of Nepal from 11 December 1911 until his death, excepting a period in 1950-51. Born in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, he ascended to the throne at the age of five, upon the death of his father, King Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah, and crowned on 20 February 1913 at the Nasal Chowk, Hanuman Dhoka Palace in Kathmandu, with his mother acting as regent. At the time, however, the position of monarch was mainly titular, with real power in the country residing in the powerful, conservative Rana family, which supplied the country with its hereditary prime minister.

After the World War II, the liberal democratic movement reorganized in the Nepali Congress Party with the support of Tribhuvan. By 1950, however, the British no longer occupied neighboring India, and the king's position became precarious. In November of that year, Tribhuvan managed to escape the palace, along with most of the royal family, and found asylum in the Indian embassy. When the king made his way to India, the Ranas responded by attempting to replace him with his grandson, Gyanendra, but this move was rejected by the general population, which revolted, and the international community, especially Britain, which refused to recognize the new king. With their authority threatened, prime minister Mohan Shamshere Jung Bahadur Rana eventually conceded to democratic reforms, and on 18 February 1951, King Tribhuvan returned from India as constitutional monarch. By November of that year, the prime minister resigned, ending Rana rule in the country.

Central Bank of Nepal

1960 ND Issue

King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (11 June 1920 - 31 January 1972) was King of Nepal from 1955 to 1972. He was also made a British Field Marshal in 1960. He succeeded his father, King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah, who had, after years as a puppet of the Rana family, finally managed to break their more than 100-year hegemony over the country. King Tribhuvan Bir Bikram Shah died in 1955 in Zürich, Switzerland under mysterious circumstances. He was succeeded by his eldest legitimate son Mahendra.

The struggle for supremacy between King Mahendra and Nepal's first democratically elected Prime Minister B P Koirala precipitated a royal coup in December 1960.

Tightening his absolute grip on power, the King dissolved parliament, banished political parties and imprisoned many democratic leaders ushering in the Panchayat era generally acknowledged as one of repression, corruption and stagnation marked with unbridled hollow nationalism.

Starting with King Mahendra, the banknotes were issued by Nepal Rastra Bank (Nepal National Bank) which was founded in April 1956. The signature of the governors of this institution is found on the banknotes which were issued after this date. Under king Mahendra the Nepalese Government became "His Majesty's Government" (expressed by shri 5 ko sarakar which literally means "the government of the five times honoured") and remained this way during the rule of Birendra and Gyanendra. Two series of banknotes were issued during the rule of king Mahendra: The first series shows the king in civilian clothes wearing the Nepalese "topi" while on the notes of the second series the king is shown in military uniform. The second series comprised for the first time notes of the high value of 500 and 1000 rupees.

ND 1974 Issue

Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (28 December 1945 - 1 June 2001) was the son of King Mahendra, whom he succeeded in 1972 after the death of King Mahendra. He reigned until his death in the 2001 Nepalese royal massacre. He is the most internationally well-known Nepalese king in modern history.

In 1990 a series of strikes and pro-democracy riots broke out in Nepal. Because of the rioting Birendra agreed to become a constitutional monarch. He appointed an independent Constitution Recommendation Commission to represent the main opposition factions and to prepare a new constitution to accommodate their demands for political reform. The commission presented him with the draft of the proposed constitution on 10 September 1990. The new constitution would make Birendra head of state of a constitutional monarchy with a system of multiparty democracy. The draft constitution was approved by the Prime Minister K.P. Bhattarai and his cabinet and so on 9 November 1990 Birendra promulgated the new constitution transforming Nepal into a constitutional monarchy.

However, the quarrels between various political parties and numerous social problems led to the Nepalese Civil War, a conflict between Maoist rebels and government forces, which lasted from 1996 until 2006.

During King Birendra's rule one can also distinguish between two major series of banknotes. The first series features the king wearing military uniform while on the notes of the second series the king is wearing the traditional Nepalese crown adorned with feathers of the bird of paradise. During this period regular banknotes of 2 and 20 rupees and special banknotes of 25 and 250 rupees were issued for the first time.

Pasupatinath Temple

Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kathmandu. It is not known for certain when Pashupatinath Temple was founded. But according to legend, one day Lord Shiva grew tired of his palace atop Mt. Kailash and so went in search of a place where he could escape to. He discovered Kathmandu Valley and, without telling anyone, he ran away from his palace and came to live in the Valley. He gained great fame there as Pashupati, Lord of the Animals, before the other gods discovered his hiding place and came to fetch him. He disguised himself as a majestic deer and would not help the other gods when they asked for his help. When Shiva did not yield to their pleas, they planned to use force. God Vishnu grabbed him by his horns and they shattered into pieces. Vishnu established a temple and used the broken horns to form a linga on the bank of the Bagmati River. As time went by, the temple was buried and forgotten. Then a cow was known to have secretly sprinkled her milk over the mound. Apparently, when the cow herders dug around the spot, they found the lost lingas and again built a temple in reverence.

The inner circle of the coin indicates Shree Bhawani (Goddess Durga), Asarfi (gold coin), Nepal, and Khadga (the double-edged sword. The outer circle of the coin indicates Shree Shree Shree Gorakha Nath — Typically, Sree or Shree or Sri or Shri is a honorific prefixed with the Indian / Hindu title of respect and esteem. It is an Indian title applied to people and Hindu gods in various languages, derived from Sanskrit. Basically, the coin indicates protection of the people by Shree Bhawani and her Khadga.

Taleju Temple

Taleju temple in Kathamandu was constructed in 1564 by the King Mahendra Malla. This temple is totally devoted to Taleju, a type of the goddess Durga. Taleju Bhawani was originally a goddess from the south of India, but she became the titular deity, or royal goddess, of the Malla kings in the 14th century. The Taleju temple is one of the most well known temples out of the three Taleju temples construted by the Malla kings. Apart, Kathamandu, the other two Taleju Temples are in Bhaktapur and Patan.

Krishna Mandir

Krishna Mandir is Nepal's finest piece of stone architecture. Siddhi Narsingh, a passionate devotee of Krishna, built this temple in the 17th century when he dreamed Krishna and Radha being union at this spot. This magnificent temple is a delicate, airy creation which defies its heavy material. The first storey of the temple consists of scenes from the Hindu holy book Mahabharat; the second storey pavilions are banded by friezes from the Ramayana. Atop a stone pillar in front, a brilliantly executed large metal Garuda (the bird on which Lord Krishna rides) kneels in homage.

2002 ND Commemorative Issue

Gyanendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (born 7 July 1947) reigned as the final monarch of the Kingdom of Nepal. During his life, he has held the title of King twice: between 1950 and 1951, as a child when his grandfather Tribhuvan was forced into exile in India; and from 2001 to 2008, following the Nepalese royal massacre.

King Birendra and most of his family (including Queen Aiswarya) were massacred at a royal dinner on 1 June 2001. Published reports from eyewitnesses and the results of an investigation carried by a two man committee made up of the Chief of the Supreme Court Keshav Prasad Upadhaya and the speaker of the House of Representatives Taranath Ranabhat, confirmed his eldest son and heir, Dipendra, was the gunman. Two days after the royal massacre, Dipendra was also mortally wounded by an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot to the side of the head. After the murder of his father, Dipendra officially became king for three days as he lingered in a coma. After the death of Dipendra, King Birendra's brother, Gyanendra, then became King. There is some speculation that Gyanendra was behind a conspiracy.

The banknotes issued during this period have the same basic design as those of King Birendra whose portrait was simply replaced by that of his younger brother and successor Gyanendra. The low values of 1 and 2 rupees, and the special values of 25 and 250 rupees were not issued any more.

The legends found on the last issues of Gyanendra revert to Nepal sarakar ("Nepalese Government"), thus omitting the reference to the king.

Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

A decade-long People's Revolution by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) along with several weeks of mass protests by all major political parties of Nepal in 2006, culminated in a peace accord and the ensuing elections for the constituent assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of the abdication of the last Nepali monarch Gyanendra Shah and the establishment of a federal democratic republic in 28 May 2008.

In October 2007 a 500 rupee note was issued on which the King's portrait was replaced by Mt. Everest. This reflects the historical change from kingdom to republic. Further notes of 10, 50, 100 and 1000 rupees with Mt. Everest and without reference to the king in their legends followed in 2008.
