Spyglass Joins MecklerWeb

Shares Commitment to Internet as Gateway to Electronic Publishing and Commerce

INTERNET WORLD, SAN JOSE, Calif., June 1, 1994 -- Spyglass, Inc., a high-volume commercial licensee of the Mosaic graphical browser for the Internet, today announced that it will participate as a charter partner in MecklerWeb. MecklerWeb is a new industry-back ed Internet-based communications and marketing system, announced today by Mecklermedia Corporation, that will enable organizations to conduct business electronically and reach new markets worldwide. Other charter partners include CommerceNet, Digital Equipment Corporation, EDS and McGraw-Hill.

Spyglass will provide a World Wide Web information server on MecklerWeb, enabling business people from around the world to easily obtain the latest product information, technical support materials, and other related multimedia information about Spyglass' versions of Mosaic.

Under a multimillion-dollar development and licensing agreement, Spyglass is working with Mosaic's developer, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois/Urbana-Champaign, to expedite the delivery of Mosaic to millions of people worldwide. Spyglass is developing commercially enhanced, fully documented and supported versions of Mosaic for popular desktop computers, which the company will license to other organizations for incorporation into their products and s ervices. By focusing on OEM licensing of Mosaic, Spyglass has forged an important link in the Mosaic distribution channel that will enable NCSA to meet the overwhelming demand for Mosaic. NCSA will continue to make a "public-with-copyright" version of M osaic available on the Internet, which individuals can download and use for free. NCSA estimates that more than one million people use Mosaic worldwide and more than 30,000 additional copies are being downloaded each month.

Spyglass will ship commercial versions of Mosaic for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh computers in June, and for X Windows systems in July.

"We share Mecklermedia's vision of the Internet as a next-generation vehicle for electronic publishing and commerce, so we're very pleased to be participating in the MecklerWeb initiative," said Douglas Colbeth, president of Spyglass, Inc. "Using Mosaic, the World Wide Web and other open technologies, MecklerWeb will provide a rich, cost-effective information environment that will allow all kinds of businesses to do business worldwide. With Mosaic from Spyglass, these organizations now have the solid, tested and fully supported browsing tool they need to take full advantage of the rich resources of MecklerWeb and of the Internet in general."

Based in Champaign, Ill., Spyglass, Inc. was founded in 1990 to commercialize and support technologies from NCSA.
