The Bridges of Madison County (Clint Eastwood) Rating: 2.5 Sure, it's a lot better than the book...how the hell could it not be? (No, I haven't read it, but I have hooted over passages chosen at random, as my ever-patient friends will attest.) And the lead performances are first-rate--Streep is getting the lion's share of attention, and she's great, but I'd like to mention that I found Eastwood equally impressive, in a nearly unplayable role. Still, the film doesn't quite manage to rise above its origin as sentimental pap. Features the stupidest framing device in cinema history.
