Mi legas la artikolon “Kiom da Homoj Parolas Esperanton?” per nenomita verkisto en via Septembra 2003 eldono (pagxo 4). Mi opinias, ke oni povas respondi suficxe bone al cxi tiu demando.

La auxtoro donas la ekzemplon de la Usona censo, kiu kostas milionojn da dolaroj kaj tamen ne donas precizan solvon. Cxi tiu estas vera, sed por multaj celoj la rezulto estas suficxe bona. Ekzemple, mi estas kontenta scii ke la nombro estas “300 miliono”, ecx se la preciza nombro eble estas 20 miliono pli alta aux malpli alta. Neniu demandas nin por preciza nombro de Esperantistoj (aux, se ili faras tion, tiam ni povas ekspliki kial preciza nombro estas neebla).

Simile, Prof-o Sidney Culbert dum multaj jaroj faris censon de parolantoj de multaj lingvoj. Li taksas, ke 1.5 gxis du miliono da personoj parolas Esperanton (al la Fremda Servo Nivelo 3 kapablo). Cxi tiu nombro certe povas estas malgxusta je 25%, aux ecx 50%, sed malprobablas, ke gxi malgxustas dekoble. Gxi almenaux donas malnetan ideon de la grandeco de la Esperanto komunumo.

La auxtoro ankaux diras ke “...oni ne povas montri la verecon de iu ajn el la respondoj.”

En cxi tiu kazo, ni povas kontroli la verecon per aliaj metodoj. La nombro de Esperanto-libroj vendita cxiujare kaj la nombro de personoj kiuj cxeestas kunvenojn cxiujare kongruas kun cxi tiu nombro. Ekzemple, se 10,000 personoj cxeestas unu kongreson aux alia cxiujare, sed nur unu Esperanto-parolanto el 100 havas la tempon, monon, kaj emon iri al kongreso, tiu donas proksimuman ciferon de unu miliono Esperanto-parolantoj. Plue, la nombroj kalkulitaj por aliaj lingvoj sxajnas gxustaj, tiel la metodaro versxajne tauxgas.

I read the article “How many people speak Esperanto?” by an unnamed author in your September 2003 edition (page 4). In my opinion, we can reply to this question quite adequately.

The author gives the example of the United States census, which costs millions of dollars and nonetheless does not give a precise solution. This is true, but for many purposes the result is good enough. For example, I am content to know that the number is “300 million,” even if the precise number might be 20 million higher or lower. No one is asking us for an exact number of Esperantists (or, if they do, then we can explain why a precise number is not possible).

Similarly, Prof. Sidney Culbert has for many years done a census of the speakers of many languages. He estimates that 1.5 to two million people speak Esperanto (to the Foreign Service Level 3 capability). This number certainly could be off by 25%, or even 50%, but it is unlikely to be off by a factor of ten. It gives us at least a rough idea of the size of the Esperanto community.

The author also says that “...you can't show the truth of any of the answers.”

In this case, we can check the truth by other methods. The number of Esperanto books sold annually and the number of people who participate in conventions every year is consistent with this number. For example, if 10,000 people participate in one convention or another every year, but only one Esperanto speaker out of 100 has the time, money, and desire to go to a convention, that gives an approximate number of one million Esperanto speakers. Further, the numbers calculated for other languages appear correct, therefore the methodology seems appropriate.

This is an important question, and not just because people often ask it. First, it shows that Esperanto is not some half-baked idea or obscure cult. If 1.5 to two million people speak it, it is not some oddity invented in our basement, it is a real movement. Second, it shows that people can find all kinds of interesting friends and ideas in the Esperanto world, which gives the questioner an array of good reasons to learn it.
