Shell jackets are useful for proection against cold rain, or for some people, extreme cold. The main intrinsic design limitations are that
For this reason, many runners don't wear a shell unless they absolutely need to do so. So where do people need such jackets ? Either in cold rain, or in extremely cold and windy conditions.
Shell jackets are one item where a persistent bargain hunter can pick up a very good deal. For example, ebay frequently has them available for almost nothing, and the websites listed above often have good deals on shell jackets. There are many of these that are very good, it's hard to go wrong, as long as you stick with reputable brands. Here we review three jackets, all of which the owners are very happy with. Here are some things to consider looking for:
People who need more breathability than most jackets offer should consider using some sort of vest. A vest provides better breathability than almost any jacket -- no need for mesh underarms if there aren't any underarms in the first place!
Very light shell jacket with pockets. Nice for visibility especially in the screaming yellow, and seems waterproof/breathable enough. The Flash jacket is similar except has larger reflective patches. A solid product, though not earth shattering (or to put it another way, there are a lot of very good jackets on the market)
This jacket has it all, and it's at the right end of the price spectrum (though one may get something good cheaper at REI)
***** cos it's really good. But so is the competition.
The price appears to be more competitive now. The material is waterproof stretch nylon, a more refined material than that found on cheaper poly jackets. There is careful attention to detail in the construction -- things like waterproof seals on the zip, zip grippers, and a wicking liner material. These add-ons probably explain the relatively high price (which is not as high any more)
Editorial note: this product isn't on HIND's website anymore, and it doesn't appear that they have any true successor to this. However, there are other brands that make jackets with mesh underarms and/or side-panels in more breathable material.
Editorial note: Perdy is saying that his sleeves were soaked in perspiration because the NRC jacket lacked the breathability features of the HIND jacket.
