Comments: I started working for Kelly in New Orleans, where a nice college boy who could type 75 wpm actually got treated with respect. True, I was only getting paid $8.50/hour, but I did get flowers for Secretary's Day. Can't beat that.
When I moved to New York, I had my files transferred, and still had to spend a couple of hours filling out forms, taking tests, and talking with a counselor. The counselor was courteous and professional, and I got work fairly quickly. Unfortunately, the folks at Kelly are so busy & have so many temps and clients, that they simply can't keep track of you. I repeatedly told them that I didn't want to work stand-by and refused to work in a smoking environment (namely Phillip Morris - which, by the way, sells cartons at a discount rate every Fridays to their employees). I also constantly requested long-term work. Naturally, they kept asking me to do standby, they kept offering me jobs at Phillip Morris, and I only got one longer-term job (1 month), and that one by accident.
I guess they aren't the worst pimps on the block, though; they get a lot of work at JP Morgan, and have some kind of Morgan "Temp Pool," which if you get in, puts you at the top of Morgan's work list and (I think) offers raises every X number of hours. (N.B. - Kelly will only offer this to you if you impress someone during your assignments.)
