Comments:
I first started working for them in the mid 80's and they sent me to
Playboy press doing clerical. Within 2 weeks I was promoted to sales.
3 months later I applied for a permenant position, a month later I was
told the assignment was ending. I was told privately that I was doing
a better job than my immediate supervisor and she felt threatened by
me, especially since I had a college degree and she didn't.
I informed Susan, the owner of Winmar but she never got me another
position.
Years went by and I later became a manager of Word Processing and
computers. When I was laid off due to a merger, I called Susan and
told her that I was looking for some temp work (in word processing and
desktop publishing) while I was looking for a regular position. She
told me she had an ideal position for me, I told her I would come down
immediately after I had an interview for a perm position.
I got to her office 1 hour after my interview and she told me the
position was already taken, that if I had come immediately, instead of
going on that interview I would have been working the next day (like
right, I am going to pass up a chance for a perm position). She then
told me I would have to take a typing test. No problem. Instead of
having me take a test on a computer, she wanted me to take it on a 20
yr old electric (not even electronic) type writer where the carrage
moves. I informed her I haven't typed on a regular type writer in
about 15 yrs. She told me there should be no difference between
taking a typing test on a typewriter and a computer.
I took the test, even though I knew, at this point, it was all BS and
a waste of my time. The receptionist even apologized for the
condition of the typewriter. Needless to say I didn't score that high
on the typing test.
When I was finished, I asked Susan why she wasn't testing me on my
computer skills. She just shrugged her shoulders and told me it
wasn't necessary and then told me to call her associate the next
day.
The next day I called her associate and gave her my name. she put me
on hold for about 5 minutes and when she came back, told me that they
didn't have anything at this time to fit my skills, unless I wanted a
receptionist position paying $6.50 am hour. I told her not to hold
her breath for my response and that she should destroy my appliation
and to be sure that as soon as I was back working full time, I will be
sure never to use her company's services and that they really should
join the rest of the 21st century and get a computer. After all, they
aren't that expensive.
