These shots that introduce the lakeside location were a backup strategy to
replace a different sequence that the crew couldn't shoot because of bad
weather. (The shot shown below was actually taken by Duraid Munajim,
without Sallitt's presence.) Though this establishing sequence doesn't
much resemble the transitional shots in the films of Ozu (for one thing,
Ozu generally doesn't bother establishing anything), Sallitt was trying for
an Ozu feeling in the editing. In his mind, this means giving the shot
a certain independence from the story, leaving it on screen for a period
of time determined by the image itself instead of its context.
