Now THAT's Good Soap!
Too bad it's from 1979
About two weeks ago on the SoapNet reruns of
Ryan's
Hope from 1979, we go to the point where
Roger accidentally contributed to his brother-in-law Tom's death. Devestated, he
made the mistake of telling Rae, who, despite being his "loving friend" (now
known as "friend with benefits"), tape recorded him and has used this against
him in her scheme against Frank and
Jill.
For those of you NOT watching,
Frank wound up dumping Rae days (or weeks) before their wedding to return to his
true love, Jill Coleridge. Rae than made it look like the Senator was being paid
off by Snow, who died in Rae's apartment, and whose body Rae had removed while
she and Frank enjoyed a delicious Chinese meal at
Lem's.
What I like so much about these
older shows is that people have extreme reactions but get revenge or act out in
ways that make sense. No one is posing as a dead half-sister or throwing someone
down a well (a story we all got tired of on AMC in 1991), but here we have Rae
going to extremes to destroy Frank, whom she spent so much time creating. He'd
never be Senator without her.
And making
it look like Jill set him up by turing in evidence, and using Jill's brother
Roger to do it, is genius. Scorned and horrible, but genius.
And she didn't have to pose as a man
either, like Sami on Days of Our
Lives.
