As part of my story on volunteering, I met one of the volunteer coordinators at God's Love We Deliver. I read their press kit a few days ago and of course I was reduced to tears. Tales of people homebound with AIDS, often only seeing the people who deliver food to them. It's heartbreaking just reading about it.
I was very impressed with their operation, and how they deal with volunteers. All the volunteers seemed very happy, like I have never seen people happy before. Plus, add to the factor of being in New York, and that seems more miraculous. Well, I am convinced that I must do some volunteering there. It's good work and I will probably meet some upbeat folks.
Over the next two days, I wound up going to the volunteer open house at GMHC. They make a very good effort. However, I went by God's Love again one night, and that convinced me once and for all that I have to just make the time to volunteer there. It just seems too important an endeavour not to make time for it.
In the synchronicity of things, I ran into two people I knew from volunteering at the Center, years ago. L and J are a bit off are good eggs. I wound up having dinner with them, and I got to interview them as well. Funny how things operate, running into people just when you were thinking about them, or need them. It's been an interesting six months, reconnecting with people I used to know, and discovering new friends as well.
I am not being fatalistic here. Just seeing, now that I am 35, just how many people you get to know in a lifetime, and how it's good to keep yourself from burning your bridges irrevocably.
