I'd seen the heron twice before last week. Both times, something had startled it and it was flying away from me. I've been on the lookout ever since. Twice in the last few days it has been out. Apparently, standing very still is the blue heron's superpower so photographing it is a matter of finding the right angle. I got real lucky both times. The close-up in photo 4 is from about ten yards, maybe less. There was enough brush between me and the bird that it either didn't know I was there, or didn't care. All the others are from eighty to one hundred yards. In photos 5 and 6 it was in the bushes next to one of the lower ponds. I was looking down from the dam. You'll note the bird is basically the same color as most of the brush (that's not by accident). It was so hard to spot that I had to use the branches in the foreground as reference points so I could find it through the viewfinder. |
