Freak Tree

I was standing under this tree looking for birds the other day. I looked at the tree for a second and thought it looked really off, somehow. See photo 1. So I cleaned my glasses and it still looked that way. What I thought I saw was a dead pine trunk with a live hardwood limb growing out of it. It was only after I looked from another angle that I could see what was going on. I also noticed that two of the hardwood's branches were fused together, as seen in photos 2, 3, and 4. Photos 5 and 6 are the leaves of the hardwood. It's not familiar to me so I couldn't identify it.
