Claire's Visit to a Georgian Grocery

Two weekends ago we went to a Georgian restaurant near Coney
Island. It was very similar to the food we had while we were
in Georgia! Afterwards, we went to an Uzbek grocery store.
There are a lot of immigrants from former Soviet nations in
the neighborhoods around Coney Island.

The Uzbek grocery store has a large prepared foods section
with all kinds of Eastern European and central Asian dishes.
We got some plov for dinner, which is Uzbek pilaf with rice,
beef, raisins, and carrots. They had a separate platter with
roasted garlic and peppers that they added on top. We also
got some pickled tomatoes, some carrot salad, and a cold
yogurt soup called okroshka that had potatoes, rhubarb, and
dill. It was very tangy and refreshing for a hot day. They
also had Georgian tarragon soda. We are planning to go back
next weekend to try some more things!

I also have some pics from one of my weekly grocery shopping
excursions in Chinatown. There are stands along the main
street that sell fruits and vegetables. They change depending
on what's in season. There are usually some exotic fruits
and we like to try a new one every now and then. Last weekend
we got a custard apple, it was very sweet, almost like a very
ripe pear. They also carry potato chip flavors from China
and Japan and we try the interesting ones. Some of them, like
honey butter, we like and get again. We won't be getting
cucumber again though!

And lastly a double rainbow I saw after work last week! That
rainstorm brought in the cold fall weather.
