2 December 1998: Good Luck, Kid

Well, first thing this morning, reading Newsday, I read all about World AIDS Day and was shocked to read the lastest neurotic, paranoid antics of our beloved Mayor, His Honor, Rudolph Giuliani. The Mayor directed the police to pen in marchers in the fight against AIDS. I was shocked later to hear, on Gay Cable News, that there were snipers on the roofs near City Hall Park, and that they were taking decibel readings at Battery Park where the names of the dead were being raised. This is a complete outrage. World AIDS Day has been observed for years without this sort of insulting prophylaxis.

Quality of life, huh?

I was also pleased to see M on the cover of Newsday. He's sort of famous in activist circles. He heckled the President at the HRC dinner earlier this year. He's the one I had dinner with back on 27 October.

Way into the night, while writing and watching some horrible movies on TV, I got email from some teenager who was "disturbed" by my calling the incipient homophobia of the recent film Apt Pupil [this is a text file, no html; hit the back button to get to this page].

So I wrote a lengthy reply to the kid. I wrote it while watching not one but two movies with fag jokes and homophobia. In one, there was a "be a real man" scene in a gay sauna. In another, some spies discuss how to blackmail homosexual spies among them. Here is my reply to that kid. I never did hear back from him. It's a fairly long missive, so if you care to read it, click here. It's text only, no html, so hit the back button on your browser to get back to this page.
