I watched the VHS copy of the movie that I got back from the duplicators, and I decided to accept this cut and stop editing. I'm not completely sure that all the changes we've made recently are right for the film, but they look okay to me today, and at a certain point you just have to give it up. I've been reading lately about Fassbinder, who got bored quickly and abandoned his films after the most perfunctory post-production and editing. It's a heretical attitude, but it made it possible for him to make forty-odd films in thirteen years. And almost all of them look really assured, regardless of the biographical information. I wonder if anyone besides the filmmaker picks up on all the last-minute fussing that so delays the release.
