I was deeply interested in building a solarbot (such as this light-seeking mouse) but I'm told they didn't run so well on carpet, turning it into a bit of a loss.
SVEC had a bridge-building contest: with a "wrench-full" of spaghetti, 3 feet of tape and unlimited string, build a bridge to span a gap and bear as much load as possible.
My bridge, took at least an hour to build and was based on a very simple suspension design. It supported 42 ounces before being being clearly close to collapse.
