The character structure of modern man, who reproduces a six-thousand-year-old patriarchal authoritarian structure, is typified by characterological armoring against his inner nature and against the social misery which surrounds him. This characterological armoring is the basis of isolation, indigence, craving for authority, fear of responsibility, mystic longing, sexual misery, and neurotically impotent rebelliousness, as well as pathological tolerance. In the form of fascism, mechanistic, authoritarian civilization reaps from the suppressed little man only what it has sown in the masses of subjugated human beings in the way of mysticism, militarism, automatism, over the centuries.

This inclination to identify is the psychological basis of national narcissism, i.e., of the self-confidence that the individual man derives from the “greatness of the nation.” The reactionary lower middle-class man perceives himself in the führer, in the authoritarian state...The wretchedness of his material and sexual situation is so overshadowed by the exalting idea of belonging to a master race and having a brilliant führer that, as time goes on, he ceases to realize how completely he has sunk to a position of insignificant, blind allegiance.
