Campers' Group Bulletin - Fall 2023

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower. - Albert Camus

September 29-October 2, Bike Ride/Camping Trip, Fishermen's Memorial State Park, Narragansett RI
There's no better way to see the sights of Block Island than by biking! We will stay at a Rhode Island campground that is only a 10 minute bike ride from the Block Island ferry. There is a beautiful 7.5 mile loop that includes nine stops along major sights at the southern end of the island (see info below), plus there can be an option to add 8.5 miles that wind through some of Block Island's most beautiful landscapes. Also, depending on your riding ability, another 14 miles or so can be added to the day to see more of the island!
Fishermen's Memorial State Park Campground offers scenic vistas near the dunes and ocean. We have reserved several tent-only sites in Area 3 for 3 nights. This area has a bathroom and shower building. Each campsite allows a maximum of two tents, and 1 car. An additional car must park in a designated parking area about a 3 minute walk away.
To join, RSVP and pay $69.75 on the meetup.com page for this event.

October 6-9, Camping Trip, Samuel F. Pryor Campground, Gardiner NY
Referred to affectionately by hikers and climbers as the "Gunks," the Shawangunk Mountain region offers a hiking experience of great variety and beauty. Veteran hikers will find the challenge of rough trails and rock scrambles, while less ambitious hikers may enjoy spectacular views from gentle carriage roads. The dramatic landscape is fashioned of miles of white cliffs and ledges, clear mountaintop lakes, deep oak forests, and sparse ridge top barrens of bonsai-shaped pitch pines.

Join us for spectacular hikes such as Gertrude's Nose, Labyrinth and the Lemon Squeeze, Lost City and more. The group may decide on specific hikes just before or at the beginning of the trip. From easy carriage roads to advanced scrambles, there will be something for everyone!

The Gunks is one of the premier climbing areas in the country. Easy to advanced climbs are available. Some may want to independently arrange a climbing session with one of the local licensed guides. This may be done individually or with a portion of the group.

RSVPS ARE PER TENT, NOT PER PERSON.

We have reserved 10 campsites that accommodate SMALL 2-3 PERSON TENTS ONLY on a 12 x 12 platform (sorry, no hammocks allowed). Both tents must fit on the platform. 1 car MAX at each site. 7 are drive-in sites and 3 are walk-in. We have also reserved 5 parking spaces in the main lot. 15 cars can park at the campground, any others will be given a pass to park at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center, about a 1/2 mi trail walk or 4 min drive from/to the campground. Carpool if possible, and arrange for one person's car to store items for all people on each site.

Coin Operated Showers: $1 for 4 minutes
Communal Pavilion: Shared picnic tables, sinks, and electricity for charging small electronics.
Communal Fire Pit: Firewood is provided. (NO FIRES ALLOWED AT CAMPSITES)

RSVPS ARE PER TENT, NOT PER PERSON. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event.
To join, RSVP and pay $63 on the meetup.com page for this event.

Sunday, October 15, Bike Trip, Wallkill Valley Rail Trail, New Paltz NY
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a rail trail and linear park that winds along the former Wallkill Valley Railroad rail corridor in Ulster County, New York. The ride will be approximately 32 miles, New Paltz to Kingston and back. The trail is mostly flat, with a few small hills at Rosendale and when entering Kingston. We will maintain a steady pace with planned breaks to keep the group together. Carry lunch or energy snacks, or we will find a lunch spot in Kingston. *** Fall colors should be at their Peak! ***

We will meet at 11am in the Free Municipal Parking Lot in New Paltz, ride across the Wallkill River Bridge, then through the towns of Rosendale and Ulster, and into Kingston to stop for a lunch break or at a lunch spot in town. After the ride back at about 4pm, some of us will walk around New Paltz, and may find a spot for an early dinner.

Hybrid and road bikes are best for this ride, but mountain bikes can be used as well, although you may be slower. Those with a road bike should understand that much of the trail will be fine crushed stone with asphalt at either end. Very narrow tires may not be the best choice in some sections. Please check your bike before this event and get a tune-up if necessary. Please carry a spare tube, bike pump, bike lock, and ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET.

HEAVY OR STEADY ALL DAY RAIN CANCELS. A small chance of rain will not change our plans.

Please RSVP on the meetup.com page for this event.
