July 1-4, Camping Trip, Worthington State Forest, Columbia NJ We’ll be camping at a group site, right on the Delaware River. Put on your swimsuit, and boat or fish from the boat launch near the campsite. Hikers can climb up the Appalachian Trail to Sunfish Pond, an unspoiled glacial lake, or visit the Mohican Outdoor Center for nearby swimming or boating. On Saturday or Sunday morning we may hike up to Sunfish Pond. Chemical toilets by the site, flush toilets and showers in another part of the park. Quiet hours are 10 P.M. to 6 A.M. July 16-17, Camping Trip, Overnight Delaware River Canoe/Kayak and Camping Trip, Dingman's Ferry PA Join us for a river camping adventure! This outing requires that you either have a canoe or kayak, or privately arrange with an outfitter to rent one. For those of us with a river-worthy canoe or kayak we will be meeting at the Bushkill, PA Delaware River Access at 8:00 A.M. We will then take the free shuttle service to Dingmans Ferry PA where we will pack up and get on the river. If you are arranging to rent a canoe/kayak, you will need to be ready to go from the Dingmans Ferry Boat Access at 10:00 am. We will paddle for anywhere from 2-5 hours depending on water levels, wind, group abilities and amount of non paddling time. Camping will be on a primitive site in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. These sites contain no amenities other than a fire ring. Day two will again consist of between 2-5 hours of paddling to the Bushkill River Access where our cars will be waiting. You will be required to bring all items needed to camp, such as a tent, sleeping bag, food, water etc. Everything will need to be packed in your canoe/kayak. Sharing of boats, equipment and supplies, etc. need to be preplanned and prearranged. There are no options for purchasing items while on the River. This section of the Delaware contains mostly class I rapids and possibly some class II rapids depending upon the water level. You need to have some river paddling experience. There is an inherent risk with river boating. Wearing a PFD (life vest) is required at all times in the water. NO exceptions. You will be required to sign a waiver of liability and provide an emergency contact. Poor weather forecast or poor river conditions will cause this trip to be cancelled or postponed. Sunday, July 24, Day Hike, Norvin Green State Forest/Highlands Natural Pool, Ringwood NJ Join us for an intermediate day hike in this nearby undisturbed forest, and then for a relaxing swim in a natural pool! You are also welcome to just swim and picnic on the grounds. The hidden gem of the Wyanokie Highlands, the Highlands Natural Pool is an Olympic size, stream-fed freshwater pool. It is located adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest, and The New Weis Center for Education, Arts & Recreation (click here for directions). The Pool grounds include a picnic and barbecue area. There is direct access to a recreation field (including a baseball backstop), volleyball court, ping-pong tables, and over 21 miles of pristine hiking trails in the forest. The pool will be open from 10am to 8pm. Ken will be leading approximately a 3-4 hr hike at 10am. Bring prepared food or barbecue on their grills. If little room is left in the smaller inner lot, please park in the Weis Center’s main parking lot on the right, near the end of Snake Den Rd. $10 per adult, $3 per child, for the day, paid when you arrive. July 29-31, Camping Trip, Eagle Point on Schroon Lake, Pottersville NY Join us for a great paddling and hiking weekend! Eagle Point Campground is located on the west shore of 4,230-acre Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks, about a half hour drive north of Lake George. The nine-mile-long, one-and-a-half-mile-wide, 152-foot-deep lake is paradise to all boaters. A variety of boating is available on Schroon and other lakes in the area. Inexpensive boat rentals and a boat launch are in the campground. If you have your own, motorboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks are welcome at the park. For anglers, fish include lake trout, landlocked salmon, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, bullhead, and pickerel. An abundant amount of hiking is available at nearby Pharaoh Lake Wilderness, Hoffman Notch Wilderness and Vanderwacker Mountain Wild Forest. The campground has a beach, and the area is also popular for bicycling. Restaurants, antique shops, gift stores, and various craft shops are nearby in the quaint town of Schroon Lake. We have 4 sites reserved near the lake, but they can accommodate only 2 tents each, or 8 total, so please share if possible. RSVPs are per tent, not per person. August 6-7, Camping/Cabin Trip, Thendara Mtn Club, Harriman State Park NY Our friends at Thendara Mountain Club have invited us to stay overnight; camping on their grounds, sleeping in a screened in bunk house, or staying in their rustic cabin in Harriman State Park. There is a multi-tent campsite on the property, and a screened-in bunk house with separate men’s and women’s bunk rooms. (First come, first served for camping, bunkhouse and lodge bedroom space.) The lodge (built 1929) has heat, electricity, a full kitchen, indoor men’s and women’s washrooms with hot showers, and bathrooms about 50 ft from the cabin. There are seven bedrooms with 2-4 cots each (rooms are shared). The lodge also has a big main room with fireplace, comfortable seating, eating table and screened in porch. Besides hiking, you are welcome to stay on the club’s grounds, and swim or boat on Lake Tiorati from the club’s supervised boat dock. (Boats are available when you pay the day or overnight fee.) The weekend includes Saturday night dinner, Sunday breakfast and a Sunday bag lunch, paid separately to Thendara when on site. Thendara asks all members and guests to help with a simple chore, like clearing the table, washing or drying dishes, etc. You will be assigned something before dinner. Arrive Saturday morning to meet up with the group at the lodge, and then carpool to the trail head, if necessary. After the hike we will return to camp for a relaxing happy hour in front of the fire! Dinner will be provided by the Thendara host for this weekend. Diet restrictions can usually be accommodated - just be sure to tell the host when you RSVP. You may set up your tent at the campsite, or sleep in the bunkhouse. The campsite is primitive, and has room for a number of smaller (2-4 person) tents. The bunkhouse has wood platform bunks with mattresses, but bringing a sleeping pad along with your sleeping bag is recommended. Water and the campfire will be by the cabin. (No fires by the campsite, only in the main fire ring by the cabin.) If sleeping in the cabin, you will need to bring a sleeping bag or sheets and pillowcase. There are wool blankets and pillows available. There will also be a local hike on Sunday starting at 11am from camp. If it is your first time at Thendara, and choose to stay the entire weekend, the total cost will be approximately $41, which will cover meals and lodging for Saturday night (meals are Saturday happy hour and dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch). YOU MUST RSVP AND SIGN UP FOR MEALS BY WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3rd for the host to know how much and what food to bring and prepare. Also be sure to advise of any food allergies or restrictions. Thendara a la carte fees: Day fee to use the facilities: $7 per day (paid when you RSVP), Overnight fee for a first time guest (cabin, bunk house or camping): $12 per night (no additional day fee to use the facilities), Saturday happy hour: $6, Saturday dinner: $12, Sunday breakfast and bag lunch for the trail: $10 (Meal fees are approximate; final amount will depend on what the host brings and prepares.) You can take the train or bus to Sloatsburg and can either hike in, ride a bike up scenic Seven Lakes Drive, or we can arrange to have someone from camp with a car meet you at the station. August 12-14, Camping Trip, Promised Land State Park, Canadensis PA We will be camping at eight (8) of the many wooded sites near the lake in the Pickerel Point camping area. Walk or drive to the beach and swim, or rent a canoe/kayak/rowboat and tool around Promised Land Lake. The ambitious can bicycle around the lake or explore the Bruce Lake Natural Area. The rest of us may follow the self-guided nature trail around Conservation Island. The campground has new facilities - hot showers and flush toilets. Each site has been graded with gravel, and accommodates only 2 tents each, so please share if possible. This recently redesigned campground also has newly paved and mostly assigned parking. One (1) parking space is assigned to each campsite, in the small lot by our campsite group. Overflow parking is within walking distance on the campground peninsula. Carpooling is recommended. August 26-29, Bike Trip, Star of the Sea Hostel, Nantucket MA This is the rescheduled trip, postponed from from Oct 2-5 2015. Anyone who has paid for their hostel bed, and has not gotten a refund from the hostel, or has paid the $3.39 Campers‘ Group fee, will be included in the new RSVP list. If you cannot, or do not want to attend on the new date, you can ask for a refund from the hostel, or have someone new that wants to attend pay you for the hostel directly (that person’s name then has to be submitted to the hostel to update the reservation, and to Ken to update the list here). Take a day or two off from work and extend your weekend with us at this unique hostel, and enjoy all that this beautiful island has to offer! Originally a 19th century lifesaving station, the hostel’s main building has a large kitchen, dining room, and a den. Separate buildings house men’s, women’s and co-ed dorms. (Sorry, no dogs or other pets allowed on this trip.) Leave your car in one of the ferry lots on the mainland (remember to pack light), bring or rent a bicycle (or even an electric scooter), and tour the island on miles of bike paths, or take in the flora and fauna by hiking or kayaking. Surfside Beach is just across the street from the hostel. There is even a shuttle bus to take you from the center of the island to the historic whaling village. September 2-5, Camping Trip, Rip Van Winkle Campground, Saugerties NY Join us for camping and hiking in the Catskills! We have reserved two large group sites that contains campfire rings, on-site water, charcoal BBQ grills, multiple picnic tables, and a large canopy set up over the tables. With 160 wooded acres, an entire mile of frontage on the Plattekill Creek, a swimming hole, koi ponds, a stocked bass pond, children’s activities, a camp store, handicapped accessible bathroom and shower facilities, this campground has most everything a camper could ask for. Located near excellent hiking in the Catskill mountains, it is also just a 10 minute drive to Saugerties and 15 minutes to Woodstock NY. RSVPs are per tent, not per person. Sharing and carpooling is encouraged! When you RSVP, you are paying for all 3 nights - the only choice available. The payment of $84 is for one tent with one person, which will cover the cost to camp with the group for the weekend. The campground prices have been significantly raised this year, and will be more costly to our group, but Campers‘ Group will be covering some of the cost to allow this trip to be more affordable to it’s members. If you will have more than one person in your tent, we ask you to please contribute an additional amount, whatever you can afford, for each additional person when paying for your tent space. Campground pricing for additional adults: $10/night, children ages 3-17 $5/night, and ages 2 and under are free. They also charge $24/night for each additional tent. September 16-18, Camping Trip, Camp Taylor Campground and Lakota Wolf Preserve, Columbia NJ Located in the beautiful mountains of Northwest New Jersey, Camp Taylor is adjacent to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and Appalachian Trail. Their large wooded sites and miles of hiking trails offer a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature. The howling of wolves, which can be heard while sitting at your campfire, reinforces the feeling of a remote wilderness setting. The Lakota Wolf Preserve, located on the campground, offers educational talks and excellent photo opportunities. Wolf Watches begin at 10:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and last 60-75 minutes. Registration begins 1/2 hour before tour start times. Tours cost $15 for adults and $7 for kids up to 11 years old, plus tax. September 30-October 3, Camping Trip, Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague MD Camp behind the dunes on this beautiful barrier island off the coast of Maryland. Wonderful wild ponies share the island with people! We have reserved six oceanside campsites for the weekend. These are walk-in sites; vehicles can park near the site but campers will need to carry equipment on a boardwalk about 100 feet in to the dunes. Rent kayaks, canoes, and SUPs at the canoe/kayak rental lot, and paddle on the calm bay side of the island. This trip is a longer drive than most. Join us for the long weekend! Cold showers and chemical toilets in the national park, hot showers in the adjacent state park. $15 entrance fee per vehicle. To arrange carpooling, contact a trip leader ASAP.
