I’m feeling a cool breeze as I write these words. Soon it will be time to go out and play in the snow. The woods are so different in the winter: the trees are sleeping and everything is still, quiet, and covered in white. In many ways, this is my favorite time of the year. The key to enjoying the outdoors in cold weather is to be active and participate in winter sports such as hiking, snow-shoeing, skiing and snowboarding. You can do all these things during our January, February and March weekend trips, and return at night to a warm motel, cabin or B&B. To reserve a space on a weekend trip or a day event, call the leaders during the listed time period. If you need information earlier than the dates listed below, call David at 718-897-1448. You can mail us your dues or pay it at the trip or event. One year’s membership costs $12 for an individual or $18 for a family ($8/individual or $12/family if you receive the newsletter by e-mail). January 20-22, Cabin Trip, Catskill Mountains, Fleischmanns NY
We’re staying at The Highlands Inn, a cozy Bed & Breakfast that’s very close to Belleayre Mountain in the Catskills. At Belleayre, you can hike, snow-shoe, downhill and x-country ski, and snowboard. All equipment can be rented, and you can purchase discounted lift tickets through the B&B. The Highlands Inn requires a two-day minimum stay; your cost will depend on how many people you share a room with. Breakfast is included. NO CALLS BEFORE JANUARY 13.

February 17-20, Cabin Trip, North Country Ski Weekend, Upper Jay NY
Enjoy all winter sports and stay in a comfortable motel in Adirondack Park. Nearby Lake Placid has indoor and outdoor ice-skating rinks; go to Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Cascade for x-country skiing and snowshoeing; or Whiteface Mountain for downhill skiing and snowboarding. All equipment can be rented and you can purchase lessons. March 18-20, Camping/Cabin Trip, Tohickon Valley Park, Point Pleasant PA
Enjoy the comforts of a warm and cozy cabin by the flowing Tohickon Valley Creek, or rough it in your tent. It’s possible that, during the weekend, water will be released from an upstream dam, enlarging the creek and making it a nirvana for kayakers. The cabin has a kitchen, bathroom, shower and wood-burning fireplace, and beds for eight people. Bring your own food, utensils and linens. NO CALLS BEFORE MARCH 11.
