Campers' Group Bulletin - Spring 2023

It is spring again! The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart. - Rainer Maria Rilke

March 24-26, Camping Trip, Camp Sacajawea, Sparta NJ
Join us for a car camping trip at this interesting private facility. Formally a girl scout camp, Camp Sacagawea is now a facility for a small Renaissance fair with medieval live action role playing (LARP), weddings, and other group events.
We will have exclusive use of a group area within the 200 acre property, and have access to all the camp trails and outside areas for exploring and relaxation. Flush toilets and hot showers are available in the main house on the property, about a 5-minute walk from the campsite. A galley kitchen is also available there for potable water, microwave and freezer use only. The camp provides firewood, which will be about $15 per person. Please bring cash.
*** RSVPS ARE PER PERSON ***
Stoke State Forest and Kittatiny Valley State Park offer moderately strenuous hiking, about a 20-minute drive from the campground.
This is a dog friendly event! Your dog must be quiet, well behaved, and up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations. If we have not met you and your dog, you must contact a host to ask permission to attend before RSVPing.
To join, please RSVP and pay $53.85 on the Meetup.com page for this event.

May 5-7, Camping Trip, Round Valley Wilderness Campground, Lebanon NJ
The brisk blue waters of Round Valley Reservoir attract swimmers, boaters, fishermen, picnickers and campers to its scenic shore. The reservoir covers over 2,000 acres and is approximately 180 feet deep, the deepest lake in New Jersey. It has a water capacity of 55 billion gallons.
Round Valley is one of the few NJ parks that offers wilderness camping. The campsites on the eastern side of the reservoir are accessible only by hiking a rugged trail or paddling in. The campers' parking lot is 3 miles away by foot from our campsites.
We have reserved a group campsite that is accessible either by boat or by foot only. Pack your canoe/kayak or backpack to our waterfront site. You cannot drive to these sites. This is not a car camping trip.
ALL PADDLERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A PROPERLY FITTING PFD (life jacket) AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE WATER, ZIPPED AND BUCKLED SECURELY. NO EXCEPTIONS!
RSVPs ARE PER PERSON. This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.
To join this trip, you must RSVP on Meetup.com.

May 19-21, Camping Trip, Atsion Family Campground, Shamong NJ
Join us for paddling and car camping at Atsion Lake in the Pine Barrens! We have reserved several sites at Atsion Family Campground. Flush toilets and showers are available near our sites. Our Saturday paddling trip may be on the Mullica River near our camping location on Atsion Lake, in Wharton State Forest. The Mullica River is a narrow, winding Pine Barrens river with clean cool water and small areas to pull out for a break or picnic. You can bring a kayak or rent one from an outfitter. Kayaks of 12 feet in length and under can more easily maneuver in this part of the Mullica. Trip length is approximately 4-5 hours, based on the average trip length of beginner to intermediate paddlers out for a relaxing paddle. *Changing river conditions such as weather, water levels, underwater obstacles and fallen trees can make this trip moderately challenging depending upon the paddler's level of experience and physical condition. Anyone without a PFD (personal flotation device) or not wearing it securely, zipped and buckled, at any times when on the river will not be permitted to paddle with us, NO exceptions.
RSVPS ARE PER TENT, NOT PER PERSON.
To join, you must RSVP on the Meetup.com page for this event.

May 26-29, Camping Trip, French Creek St Pk, Elverson PA
French Creek State Park is an oasis for people and wildlife. Straddling the Schuylkill Highlands, the 7,730-acre park is the largest block of contiguous forest between Washington D.C. and New York City. The forests, lakes, wetlands, and fields are a destination for people to hike, fish, camp, and bike. The Park is an Important Bird Area as designated by the National Audubon Society, and an Important Mammal Area as designated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Pine Swamp is a State Park Natural Area.
This park has so much to offer! There are two lakes for boating and fishing, 35 miles of hiking trails, 20 miles of mountain biking trails, a disc golf course, and more.
The French Creek Swimming Pool and Boat Rental provides canoe, kayak, paddle board, row boat and Sunfish sailing boats, or bring your own. Boat launches are provided at the 68-acre Hopewell Lake and the 22-acre Scotts Run Lake. There is no swimming in Hopewell Lake, but we can enjoy the enormous 24,000 sq.ft. pristine swimming pool, including a spacious shallow area for young children to swim and splash around in ($10/day, discounted for campers). The pool is supervised by American Red Cross certified lifeguards. There are also cold refreshments, food, and ice cream at the food concession.
Some of us could also take a short drive to Phoenixville to sample products from the 10 breweries in the area, and maybe see some live music! (Please arrange a designated driver.)
The large campground has over 200 campsites. We have reserved several sites in loop D. Hot showers and flush toilets are available. Service dogs are allowed in our loop. RSVPs are PER TENT, NOT per person. This is a RAIN OR SHINE event.
To join, please RSVP on the meetup.com page for this event.

June 2-4, Canoe/Kayak Camping Trip, Hudson River Islands Kayak/Canoe Camping!, Hudson NY
Hudson River Islands State Park offers a camping experience like no other. In this complex of islands, back bays, and creeks, rich in plant and animal life, there is always something new to see. Although the park is quite accessible, it feels secluded, remote, almost wild.
We will meet and park at Stockport Station Depot at slack or high tide (TBD), pack our boats and launch to avoid low tide. We'll paddle and explore the first-come-first-served primitive campsites, and choose one large enough to fit our group, and then set up camp before dinner. We will avoid paddling far into the main channel of the river, but a boat shorter than 10 feet is not recommended. A boat 12 to 16 feet or longer is preferred, for more camping gear storage, and better tracking in wind and current. The next day we will be paddling and exploring the creek and bays on the eastern shore. We may also meet some paddlers/campers at the launch that cannot arrive until Saturday morning, to bring them to our campsites before paddling further.
Campsites with a table, fire ring and privy are located on Stockport Middle Ground and Gay's Point near Hudson NY. Sites are only available on a first-come-first-serve basis. It is best that firewood is brought in as it is unclear that downed wood will be available on the island. The preferred campsites are less than a mile from the launch.
ALL PADDLERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A PROPERLY FITTING PFD (life jacket) AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE WATER, ZIPPED AND BUCKLED SECURELY. NO EXCEPTIONS!
RSVPs ARE PER PERSON. This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT.
To join, you must RSVP on the Meetup.com page for this event.

June 9-11, Camping Trip, Fairview Lake YMCA Camps, Stillwater NJ
In addition to paying the $2.39 Campers' Group fee for this trip, you must pay the Camp $68 per person by credit card on their own website by the THURSDAY 5/25 DEADLINE to attend. Please pay the Camp here. Our program will be under the option of 'Private Groups'. If the Camp does not receive payment by 5/25, you will be taken off the attending list.
Fairview Lake YMCA Camp is a very special family camping experience! Just set up at our very private and large waterfront group site, and the camp will provide organized programs for the group, and you can also arrange to hike on your own. The camp sits on mile-long Fairview Lake in Northwestern New Jersey. Their 600 acres adjoin the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, providing access to the Appalachian Trail, the Delaware River, many hiking possibilities and breathtaking views. A fleet of canoes, rowboats and kayaks offer a wide variety of water activities. This is a great weekend for kids!
We have reserved a large camping area near the far side of the lake with a fire ring, provided firewood, tables, bathroom and showers, and even unheated shelters! We are not taking any meals in the dining hall; you must bring your own food.
The Activity Schedule may include: Archery, BB Guns/Rifles, Climbing Wall/Gaga, Leap of Faith, Giant Swing, Boating, Candle Making, Stream Exploration, Outdoor Survival Lesson, Guided Swamp Walk and The Ridge Hike. This is a RAIN OR SHINE EVENT, unless the host or organizer indicates otherwise.
To join, you must RSVP on the Meetup.com page for this event.
